The Plano Police Department is stepping up their game for local buyers and sellers looking for a safe haven to conduct their exchanges. In a move that acknowledges the potential risks of online marketplace meetups, the police have launched "Exchange Zones" which are illuminated, surveillance-monitored spaces where transactions can take place with a heightened sense of security. The innovative approach caters to the thriving online commerce on platforms like Craigslist and eBay, according to Plano Texas Police Department.
But the department’s efforts don't stop there. They have dished a handful of safety tips for those unable to leverage the “Exchange Zones.” The advice, straightforward and sage, ranges from opting for a well-lit, public parking lot with video surveillance to the commonsense suggestion of bringing a friend. These pointers, all rooted in the currency of common sense, also advise against inviting strangers to your home and recommend keeping the transactions to daylight hours.
Plano’s Main Police Station and its substations have flung open their doors to these civil commerce activities, offering extended and weekend hours. The principal station on 14th Street operates from the break of dawn all the way into the evening, ensuring there's ample opportunity to swap that second-hand sofa or collect the lightly used laptop. The department has also rolled out a Safety Minute video, accessible with a simple click, to educate on the Exchange Zone perks and provide pointers for staying safe during transactions.
