A blaze tore through a Panorama City apartment building this morning, sending one elderly man to the hospital and necessitating several residents to shelter in place, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. Fire crews rushed to the four-story complex at 8525 N Tobias Ave. after reports of fire and smoke billowing from a third-floor unit at 10:23 AM, according to LAFD Alert.
The fire, originating in the third-floor laundry room, was aggressively attacked by firefighters who arrived at the scene. These firefighters employed an offensive strategy to combat the flames, which they managed to knock down in 21 minutes, as reported in a follow-up LAFD Alert. In their efforts, the firefighters discovered one patient on the fire floor, initially believed to have sustained burn injuries; however, it later turned out the 64-year-old male was afflicted with smoke inhalation only.
During the ordeal, some residents were forced to remain inside their homes until it was safe to evacuate. In a sweeping search, the firefighters verified that no other occupants required assistance. The victim was transported to a local hospital and is currently listed in fair condition, an update from LAFD's most recent update stated.
While extensive details of the fire's cause or the total cost of damages have not been released, the incident, which took place in Council District 6, saw a total of 34 firefighters respond. The LAFD continues to investigate the incident and will provide updates as more information becomes available, as the situation at the Panorama City garden-style apartment complex remains under the scrutiny of fire officials and local authorities.
