Richmond Police reported that a high-tech system and good old-fashioned detective work led to the arrest of two individuals connected to a shooting incident on Thursday. Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert, which accurately detected gunfire at 11:29 am in the 2200 block of Potrero Ave.
Upon arrival, RPD found evidence of a shooting and were able to piece together a vehicle description linked to the crime. Locating a matching car just a short distance away, in the 1900 block of Potrero Ave, the officers engaged with the individuals inside. Looking through the vehicle's window, officers made a startling discovery; a firearm was in plain view, lying within the car's interior.
The warranted search that followed led to the uncovering of another loaded gun, bolstering the arrest evidence. "Thanks to technology and the quick response of our officers, we were able to get two more firearms off our city’s streets," proclaimed the Richmond Police Department in a statement on their official Facebook page. "And two criminals will most likely be ringing in the New Year from jail!"
ShotSpotter, a system designed to detect and locate gunshots, provided the initial lead that brought to a successful close the arrest of the car's occupants. This arrest takes more guns off the busy streets, reinforcing the department's commitment, outlined in their hashtags, to #communitypolicing. The suspects' identities have yet to be released, awaiting formal booking and charges.
