The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in Jurupa Valley made a significant push against impaired driving this past Friday, rounding up a group of drivers suspected of being under the influence. During a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint operation that stretched into the early hours, the campaign screened 243 vehicles, leading to a combined total of 16 arrests and various citations.

According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office, the checkpoint was set up on Mission Boulevard and Pedley Road, a strategic location determined by the history of impaired driving-related incidents in the area. From 7:00 PM to 3:00 AM, the officers conducted 7 Field Sobriety Tests (FSTs) and arrested 6 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol. An additional three were taken into custody for operating a vehicle with a suspended license, while seven citations were handed out to those found driving without a license.

Along with the arrests and citations, three vehicles ended up being stored or impounded. The overarching aim of these checkpoints, as stated by Sergeant Ignacio Robles, is to "promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads."

Drivers nabbed for a first-time DUI in California can expect to face severe penalties, including an average of $13,500 in fines and a likely suspended license. The project, funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, serves as a reminder of the costly consequences that come with driving under the influence. "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," Sergeant Robles emphasized in a bid to dissuade potential offenders.
