In San Antonio ISD, certain families are now opting for their child's school placement for the upcoming year. This initiative is part of the district's most recent endeavor to support students affected by the recently sanctioned "rightsizing plan."

The initiative mandates the closure of fifteen campuses starting next year, according to details in a report by KENS 5. Parents scrambling to secure slots for their youngsters at alternative campuses can employ a digital 'school finder', which went live on December 1, or engage district personnel for more details.

"It's an electronic school finder where families can type in their address and find schools next to them and find out about the academic offerings and extracurricular activities that campuses offer, so we are providing that one-to-one or the electronic resource that they can use should they want to explore that on their own before making a decision," breathed Eleanor Fernandez, Executive Director for the Office of Access and Enrollment and Retention at SAISD.

SAISD trustees, by a controversial 5 to 2 vote, argue the plan’s merits as a swing toward equilibrium, as the San Antonio Express-News illuminated in a recent editorial. Alicia Sebastian, the lone black member on the board, voiced, "I support rightsizing because I support innovation, and I support being proactive to ensure that our district resources are balanced, accessible and deliver exceptional instruction, regardless of the location, demographics or areas our families find themselves in."
