A man's drug deal gone wrong leads to gunshots outside a Southwest Side gas station, resulting in a chaotic exchange where sugar was mistaken for narcotics, according to the San Antonio Police Department. Officers reported that Adam Christopher Morales, 37, shot a 33-year-old man after an argument erupted over the transaction's authenticity on Oct. 30 outside the Shell station on Old Pearsall Road.

Details from an arrest warrant affidavit, as reported by KSAT, indicate Morales became irate after his friend conducted a drug deal, believing the substances purchased to be mere sugar. The argument led to a struggled inside the man's car where Morales reportedly pointed a weapon at him. Firing the gun three times, Morales struck the man in the torso while also sustaining gunshot wounds to his extremities.

Despite their injuries, both men managed to flee the scene. The wounded 33-year-old sought help after driving down the street and was later hospitalized. Morales was also taken to the hospital a few hours later. Surveillance footage pegged Morales as "the aggressor" in the incident, a factor in his arrest on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Prior convictions on Morales’ record include drug possession and felon in possession of a firearm.

Another incident, possibly connected to the same string of events, was reported by KSAT on Monday night. A 33-year-old man was critically injured after being shot in the chest during an altercation with multiple individuals. After being shot, driving to a nearby convenience store to call for help, the man was taken to the hospital in a critical condition. Police believe this shooting, which took place just before 10 p.m. near Loop 410 and Millers Pond Park, may have been drug-related. The suspects from the other group fled the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.

Morales is currently being held at Bexar County Jail, according to KSAT. The victim of the shooting is still recovering, as police continue to piece together the circumstances of both violent events and their potential connection. San Antonio residents are left shaken by the violence that has erupted from what began as a clandestine deal, spiraling into gun violence on their city streets.
