The streets of San Antonio have once again been shadowed by the pall of a fatal officer-involved shooting, this time within the quietude of the city's West Side. The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) disclosed the identities of two Park Police officers and a 27-year-old suspect, Ray Garcia, who succumbed to a single gunshot in what's being described as an aggressive confrontation. This incident, which occurred on December 10 morning, only adds to a year already marked by unusual violence involving law enforcement in the region, according to KSAT.
The altercation, as per a preliminary report, began with a response to a disturbance call at Apache Creek Greenway North, which swiftly turned into a chase after Garcia reportedly fled upon being recognized as having multiple outstanding warrants. The chase ended abruptly in the 3400 block of Buena Vista, where Garcia and Officer Mark DeLaCruz entered into a physical struggle. Despite DeLaCruz deploying his TASER, it proved ineffective, leading to Garcia's alleged attempt to seize the officer's service weapon, an action that prompted Officer Juan Cardona to fatally intervene, according to details obtained by KSAT.
Local residents, like Lupe Sanchez and her daughter, Rosie Arroyo, recounted the shock of such violence spilling into their neighborhood. "That's awful. That's so sad that it has to happen," Arroyo reportedly told KSAT during a reflective morning walk near the scene. The sentiment resonates with many, acknowledging a disquieting increase in nearby violence. "It's getting closer and closer to home," Sanchez added, ". Things like this would happen once in a while, now it's, like, every night."
The upward trend in officer-involved shootings has not escaped the attention of SAPD Chief William McManus, who provides oversight for the Park Police officers as well. McManus has noted that the suspects in these violent encounters often possess criminal backgrounds or have outstanding warrants. Garcia, the man at the center of this latest shooting, was not exempt from such a profile, with warrants including one for a previous attempt to snatch an officer's weapon. SAPD statistics reveal a concerning narrative: officers have been involved in close to two dozen shootings since January, with more than half being fatal, as reported by KSAT.
