An off-duty cop's quick eye led to the cuffs clicking on a duo of so-called porch pirates in San Antonio. The pair, caught in the act of swiping a package from the officer's doorstep, landed in hot water after a vehicle search revealed a trove of stolen items.
According to KSAT, Elizabeth Elizalde, 36, and Bryan Salinas, 31, are the two facing charges of mail theft and possession of identifying information. With hundreds of pieces of mail, credit cards, IDs, and medication nabbed from unsuspecting San Antonians, their arrest in the 5000 block of Kenton Trace has the city breathing a collective sigh of relief. The caught were the alleged thieves after the officer peeped footage from his Ring doorbell that motioned the police into action.
Spreading some sage advice, the San Antonio Police Department is telling locals to keep a hawk's eye on their mail. "Checking your mail daily, getting informed delivery to know what is coming in the mail and getting a free credit report to check for suspicious behavior," are the recommended steps by the department, as reported by KSAT. The aftermath of these heists could see victims contacted by USPS and SAPD to reunite them with their lost correspondence.
Meanwhile, authorities are embroiled in a dense thicket of paperwork, trying to pin down the rightful owners of the seized booty. With a mountain of documents to sift through, patience is the SAPD's current virtue. "The postal service and police are working to identify the victims of this case," noted Camelia Juarez in a statement obtained by KENS 5. Investigations are ongoing, with the perps now behind bars and facing their dues under the law.
As the holiday season accelerates, so does the opportunity for thievery—so police implore residents to exercise diligence. Tips to curb these activities include opting for informed delivery, which notifies you once mail is dispatched to your abode. "Another tip is to pull up a free credit report, to see if anybody has opened up an account without you knowing. You can look for suspicious behavior and it's free once a year to just look it up," added Juarez, doubling down on preventive measures to guard against identity theft and the like, as reported by KENS 5. Vigilance, it seems, is the order of the day in the ongoing battle against the looters of the modern world's front porches.
