San Antonio turned into a tableau of chaos and flashing lights over the weekend as calamity struck the roads. In one incident, a San Antonio police officer was hospitalized with potential head injuries after a major crash involving a driver now arrested for DWI on the Southeast Side, according to KSAT.
While the officer was responding to a burglary in action and had the road's green light on his side, a man in his 60s, boldly steering a black truck while allegedly intoxicated, cut him off and T-boned his vehicle, according to the San Antonio Police Department. Despite the lights and sirens that were emblazing the night, fate intervened brutally and promptly. After the Friday night crash, the officer was not alert and was bleeding from the head, with EMS rushing to his aid and transporting him to the hospital, as per the scene's disheartened witnesses.
A second accident further gripped the city when a major crash closed down all southbound traffic on I-35 and Weidner Road for several tedious hours early Saturday morning, as reported by KENS 5. The details surrounding this crash are murky, but the aftermath was clear-cut: a severely damaged SUV, stranded and silent on the highway, captured in the stark images taken by a KENS 5 photographer.
The driver responsible for the crash involving the police officer has been evaluated for driving while intoxicated at the scene, with Sgt. Washington Moscoso stating, "There was enough cues to arrest him for DWI," in a scene that epitomized a preventable tragedy. A warning has since been issued by SAPD urging drivers to plan for sober rides during holiday celebrations. Clearly shaken from the night's events that could have been, as Moscoso put it, "avoided." A passenger in the black truck was also hospitalized for precaution following the unfortunate collision that painted a grim picture of consequence.
