The San Diego Foundation has pledged a generous grant of $500,000 to the University of California San Diego's Black Alumni Scholarship Fund (BASF), aiming to boost scholarships and support for the university's Black students. As reported by the San Diego CITD, Edward Spriggs, the Chair of the BASF, expressed his gratitude for what he called a "strong expression of confidence" in the program's mission to provide more opportunities to deserving Black scholars.

The foundation's half-a-million-dollar promise is rooted in a challenge—it hinges on the condition that BASF must match this amount through its fundraising efforts. As told by the San Diego CITD, successfully raising another $500,000 will double the donations made to the Black Alumni Scholarship Fund, magnifying their impact. BASF hopes to kick off its campaign next year as a strategic move to boost its endowment, seeking to amass $10 million by 2028 to support twice as many UCSD students annually.

Established in 1983 and located within the San Diego Foundation, the fund has a long history of supporting Black academic excellence. Over the years, the BASF has handed out more than $802,000 in scholarships to upwards of 350 students, a testament to their commitment to fostering diverse talent across various disciplines. The last fall season set a new record for the fund, with 60 scholarships awarded to fresh faces and transfer students, elevating the total count of beneficiaries to nearly 200 on the UCSD campus, according to the San Diego Foundation's website.

Selected for their academic prowess and community service track records, BASF scholars are expected not only to excel in their studies but also to emerge as leaders post-graduation, shaping a more equitable society with their contributions. "Since the start of their fund, BASF has shown a true commitment to ensuring the success of Black students at UC San Diego," noted Pamela Gray Payton, SDF Chief Impact & Partnerships Officer and a proud UCSD alumna in a statement obtained by San Diego CITD. The CITD press release affirmed UCSD's dedication to enhancing the university climate for Black students, staff, and faculty, particularly via initiatives like the Black Academic Excellence Initiative, which provides a network of resources to BASF recipients.
