With winter approaching, San Diego is beefing up efforts to keep its homeless population out of the cold and rain through its Inclement Weather Shelter Program, which increases shelter capacity on days with particularly harsh weather conditions.

The program is set to run during the chillier months from November to March and kicks into gear when temperatures plummet to 50°F or below with a 40% chance of rain on the radar or when the mercury dips to a bracing 45°F, even if rain isn't in the forecast. Exceptional conditions, like an inch of rain within a day paired with strong winds, could also trigger the program's activation.

Homeless individuals looking for a respite from the inclement weather can find refuge on a first-come, first-served basis, seeking a bed at locations detailed on the city's website. The program, having never turned anyone away, promises a bed every time it's needed. "We always have had open beds every time the program has been activated and there was never a time when we had to turn someone away," per the City of San Diego news report.

People utilizing the city's Safe Sleeping sites, designed for biting winds and icy temperatures, won’t need to seek indoor shelter. These sites feature tents that can resist even the most unforgiving weather. The tents not only keep occupants warm in the cold but also ensure coolness in heatwaves, while the raised platforms under the tents help prevent moisture issues. Regularly checked, the on-site temperature provides additional safety.

As the season of giving arrives, San Diegans who want to lend a helping hand to the homeless during winter can contribute to the Downtown San Diego Partnership's Winter Donation Drive. Rather than donating items directly to those on the streets, which can inadvertently discourage seeking shelter, the organization welcomes contributions of hats, gloves, sweatpants, socks, and sweaters. The drive is aimed at assisting those in need to stay snug in the looming winter months.
