A late-night incident involving the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) spiraled into a tense shooting on December 7, resulting in the death of a suspect and an injured police sergeant. According to the San Diego Sheriff's official release, officers responded to a reported stolen vehicle linked to a previous domestic violence case and an unsettled Emergency Protection Order (EPO). The suspect, later identified as 46-year-old Curtis Harris, was confronted at a shopping plaza in San Diego, where the tragic events unfolded.
When officers attempted to serve the EPO to Harris, who was inside Ralph's store, he fled and opened fire outside the establishment, hitting one sergeant in the head. As confirmed by a Hoodline article, the officers returned fire, striking Harris multiple times, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The injured sergeant, whose identity remains concealed, is reported to be in stable condition following the violent exchange.
Following standard procedure, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Homicide Unit has taken up the investigation to decipher the motivation behind the theft and subsequent shooting. Lieutenant Joseph Jarjura, acting as the media contact for the unit, stated that evidence is being collected and witnesses interviewed in a thorough review process. The public has been assured that there is no ongoing threat to their safety, with calls for anyone possessing information on the incident to step forward.
The multi-layered inquiry into the shooting will eventually reach the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, which will determine any potential state criminal liability for the officers involved, as per the San Diego Sheriff's release. Parallel measures, such as an administrative review by the SDPD and further evaluations by the Commission on Police Practices (CPP), are also set to occur. These processes are part of a rigorous protocol to maintain transparency and accountability within the enforcement framework.
