San Diego County Sheriff's Deputies are gearing up for a DUI checkpoint on Friday, December 15, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., and they're keeping the location a secret.
Officials from the Sheriff's Department explained that the checkpoint spots were chosen based on a careful analysis of past impaired driving incidents. The primary objective is to remove potentially dangerous drivers from the road before any harm occurs. It's essential to note that it's not just alcohol that can lead to legal trouble; prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and even legal marijuana can impair driving, and driving under the influence of any of these substances is strongly discouraged.
Law enforcement won't be cutting any slack either; deputies will be out in full force, actively looking for signs of impaired driving. The Sheriff's Department's straightforward message is clear: if you're going to consume alcohol or anything that might affect your senses, make responsible choices.
There are numerous alternatives to driving under the influence. Secure a sober friend to drive, hail a cab, use a ride-share service, or opt for public transportation. Pedestrians should also keep it sober when walking home or, better yet, enlist a sober buddy for company.
If you spot someone exhibiting signs of impaired driving, don't hesitate to call 911. For party hosts, it's essential to keep an eye on guests and ensure they have a safe way home, offering non-alcoholic options for the road. Getting caught with a DUI isn't just risky; it's costly – first-time offenders could face fines of around $13,500 and deal with the hassle of a suspended license.
This initiative is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, aiming to enhance road safety in Santee.
