The Texas Lottery is reaching new heights, offering lucky players the chance to win something more out of this world than cash. According to KXAN, the newly announced "Space Perspective Cash Adventure" could see four winners and their guests being launched to the edge of space come 2025—all potentially starting with a $20 scratch-off ticket.
Yet to win, it turns out, players will have to lose first. "You go onto our login promotion site, you enter in the losing ticket, and then we’re going to do drawings off of the losing tickets," Ryan Mindell, Deputy Executive Director for the Texas Lottery, expressed. He added that non-cash second chances are hardly unusual for the lottery, but this space venture is a distinctive prize that is bound to get people talking. And to sweeten the pot, space-bound winners might even return to Earth $100,000 richer.
75 himmelsk fortunate in the "2nd Chance Promotion" will be awarded a four-day Florida escapade. Of those, the countdown begins for four to ultimately embark on a space odyssey aboard the Spaceship Neptune, a hydrogen-helium balloon spacecraft. The flights are provided by Space Perspective, a company boasting luxury, carbon-neutral, suborbital voyages that redefine extraterrestrial travel, according to Greg Jacobs, Head of Partnerships with the space tourism outfit.
In a journey promised to be as gentle as a first-class flight, winners will take off from a sea vessel, a tactic used to avoid any terrestrial entanglements such as inclement weather and crowded skies. "They’ll be able to see the curvature of the earth, and they’ll see the sense of blackness of space," Jacobs detailed, speaking to the awe-inspiring views awaiting winners as they hover at a height mastered by fewer than 700 humans before them. Every safety measure has been considered, with multiple piloting systems and a parachute backup akin to those NASA employs.
Meanwhile, the Austin American Statesman reports that Gary Grief, the Texas Lottery executive director, has lauded the initiative as a dream come true for many, seeking to provide unique and transformative aspirations beyond monetary gain. The collaboration with Space Perspective is billed as a pioneering step forward, promising winners an extraordinary look at planet Earth from a towering 100,000 feet above the surface—above 98% of the Earth's atmosphere. According to Jane Poynter, founder and co-CEO of Space Perspective, the experience requires no prior training, likening it to the ease of boarding a commercial aircraft.
The contest is set to run until the summer of 2024. Aspiring astronauts who don't snag a winning ticket can still reach for the stars, albeit with a price tag of $125,000 per seat for a commercial flight. Whether by luck or by a hefty withdrawal from their savings, some participants will soon find themselves a whole lot closer to the cosmos.
