In what was surely a tail-wagging ceremony at the recent St. Louis Park City Council meeting, K9 Maverick took his oath of office, becoming the newest four-legged enforcer of law and order. The German Shepherd from Slovakia was sworn in on Dec. 18, with Mayor Jake Spano officiating the oath of office for the canine cop, as reported in a recent government announcement.
Maverick has been partnered with Officer Matthew McNeely of the St. Louis Park Police Department. The duo not only will patrol the streets but also represent law enforcement at community events. After completing the requisite 12-week training academy, Maverick is trained in several critical law enforcement skills, such as obedience, tracking, explosive detection, and apprehension. But Maverick isn't just a one-trick dog; his primary duties in the department will include assisting with searches and tracking, in addition to sniffing out explosives.
Fidelity to the community and the rule of law remains a cornerstone of the St. Louis Park Police Department's mission, and the inclusion of a K9 unit underscores this commitment. Officer McNeely and Maverick will be no exceptions, as they will undergo annual training and recertification, guaranteeing their readiness and performance remains at the highest level, according to the official announcement.
Residents eager to meet the new K9 officer can look forward to seeing Officer McNeely and Maverick in action, whether they're out on patrol, or showcasing their skills at local events. Be sure to give them a friendly nod – after all, they're the guardians keeping the St. Louis Park community safe, one paw at a time.
