Two Lexington firefighter paramedics were called upon to help deliver a baby at the Bedford Plaza Hotel. Lance Garden and Jake Green, dispatched from the East Lexington Fire Station, stepped in when the Bedford Fire Department's ambulance was unavailable, busy with another emergency, as reported by The City of Lexington's official announcements.
In the thick of a life-altering moment, less than five minutes apart were the woman's contractions when the paramedics arrived, hurrying to put the soon-to-be mother on a stretcher. Amidst the morning's urgency, a Bedford firefighter took the wheel, driving the ambulance towards hope and hospital care while Garden and Green provided the woman with medical assistance—work they were trained for but had never faced in the field before.
The onset of a new life did not wait, beginning its journey into the world approximately five minutes after they departed the hotel. Garden and Green found their hands not just offering aid but also welcoming new life. They delivered the baby, cut the cord, and facilitated the first embrace between mother and child.
Never having been involved in a delivery up to this point, Garden echoed the sentiment of the experience being uniquely exhilarating in an interview quoted by the City of Lexington's official announcements, stating, "I've been a paramedic for a little over five years; to have that be a first for me was definitely exciting."
