South Boston was the scene of a dramatic break-in, with police nabbing a suspect who allegedly smashed his way into the hallowed halls of a local church. It was just before 4 a.m when officers from District C-6 descended upon St. Monica Church following a security alert of a breaking and entering in progress at 331 Old Colony Ave.
A shattered window provided evidence that someone had forcefully made their way into the building. With all other entrances secure, the cops encircled the church, waiting to catch any possible suspects trying to make an escape. However, it wasn't until a K-9 officer arrived that they were able to swiftly locate the intruder, hunkered down in the church's basement.
The Boston Police Department's own furry detective, K-9 Duke, was pivotal in the operation. In a statement obtained by Boston Police Department, officials detailed how Duke and the officers eventually cornered the suspect in the basement after Duke alertly signaled a human presence. The suspect originally attempted to mislead officers with a false identity but was quickly found out during the booking process.
Steven Cyr, a 61-year-old South Boston local, was the man apprehended in the case. Following his arrest, he was charged with Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime and Furnishing a False Name. Cyr is slated to face his sentence at South Boston District Court, where the consequences of his alleged nocturnal misadventure will to fully take shape.
