Two career criminals were nabbed in a dragnet that spanned from Monterey to Marin, the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department announced, ending a spree of thefts and scams aimed at the elderly. The duo, identified as Loredana Iftimia and Vaslie Mreana, were arrested after months of investigation which included a collaborative effort with the Del Rey Oaks Police Department.
The suspects' alleged racket involved swiping wallets from shopping carts, jewelry bait-and-switches, and deception schemes mostly targeting elderly women, as per a statement on the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department's Facebook page. Detectives caught up with the pair on December 19 when they located their vehicle in Campbell, thanks to a tip-off that matched them to suspects sought in connected cases.
Following the arrest, authorities took custody and booked the suspects, and Del Rey Oaks Police Department detectives were involved in transferring the pair to face the consequences in their jurisdiction. According to a report by Golden Gate Media, officials discovered several pieces of incriminating evidence in the possession of the suspects, which are being scrutinized by detectives.
Law enforcement officials believe that the geographic scope of Iftimia and Mreana's alleged crimes may transcend the Bay Area, indicating the possibility of a far-reaching network of deceit and theft, stretching their nefarious activities across state lines. The Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department noted that a hefty amount of follow-up work is on deck, as detectives collaborate with other agencies to gauge the full reach of the duo's exploits in preying upon some of society's most vulnerable.
