A 16-year-old girl is fighting for her life in San Antonio after a hit-and-run incident left her in critical condition, authorities said earlier today. The teenager was struck by a black sport utility vehicle around 9:45 p.m. Monday while trying to cross along Rigsby Avenue on the city's East Side, as reported by KSAT.
The girl was hit near the intersection of South W.W. White Road and Loop 410, and according to police, she was not using a crosswalk at the time of the accident. After being struck, the girl was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Witnesses at the scene came forward to aid the teenager; however, details of the vehicle involved in the incident remain scarce, said police.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the hit-and-run, but thus far they have not released any information regarding the perpetrator or the vehicle in question. The public has not yet been provided with a description of the SUV or details of potential leads in the case. This has left a community rattled and a family clinging to hope as one of their battles grave injuries sustained under the cold, indifferent glare of street lamps on an otherwise unremarkable stretch of asphalt, according to Fox San Antonio.
With no suspects and sparse evidence, the hit-and-run is a stark reminder of the fleeting nature of safety on the open road and the urgency for drivers to stay vigilant, be held accountable, and for pedestrians to remain cautious, especially during these darker winter months. As the investigation carries on, the San Antonio Police Department urges anyone with information regarding the accident to come forward and help bring closure to a case that has thus far only yielded questions and heartache for a community and a family in despair.
