An 18-year-old and two teenagers are facing the possibility of adult charges in the brutal carjacking and homicide of Leandro Iquite, 18, in San Leandro this past October. The Alameda County Sheriff's Office is pushing for adult prosecution, referring to the gruesome nature of the crime where the victim was lured out and then shot in the head.
Found with a gunshot wound in an apartment complex on Miramar Avenue on October 8, Iquite was rushed to a hospital but later died. Yefry Aguilar Rubio, who was 17 at the time of the alleged crime but has since turned 18, is alleged to be one of the culprits involved in his death. Rubio's girlfriend and her brother, 17 and 16 years old respectively, have also been implicated in the case. According to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, the trio began plotting against Iquite as early as June.
All suspects, including Rubio, were residents of Redwood City, which is also where the victim lived. The Alameda County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Redwood City Police Department, descended upon Redwood City to serve search and arrest warrants at the suspects' homes on December 13. In the home of Rubio's girlfriend and her brother, investigators discovered incriminating evidence.
Moreover, an unrelated fraud operation was uncovered as the Fremont Police Department assisted in executing a search warrant at a Fremont location frequently visited by the suspects. Found, among assorted identity theft tools, was a stolen firearm within the residence. "We submitted the case to the District Attorney’s Office for charges of conspiracy, carjacking, and homicide," the Sheriff's office detailed in their post. In light of Proposition 57 and Welfare and Institutions Code 707, the office has requested that the District Attorney consider transferring the suspects to adult court.
Currently in custody in San Mateo County for a separate offense, Aguilar Rubio was arrested for Iquite’s murder after being met by investigators.
