Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is taking a stand against a company accused of preying on the nation's heroes. In a recent legal move, Paxton filed a lawsuit against VA Claims Insider, LLC (VACI), charging them with deceptive practices that allegedly defrauded veterans seeking disability benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, as stated in Attorney General of Texas.
VACI, a for-profit entity, sells memberships for what it calls "education-based" coaching and consulting services, intended to aid veterans in their pursuit of VA disability benefits. Yet, according to complaints, the company's advertisement tactics have misled and confused many of its veteran customers, especially concerning the costs—vaulting the word "free" in promotions but pegging them with a contract that demands payment of six times the amount of any increase in disability benefits they receive post-signup. The contract even includes clauses stating veterans who terminate their contracts are still on the hook for any future increases in disability benefits or face paying $5,000 in damages if they don't notify the company of an increase within a week, as per Attorney General of Texas.
The attorney general's action reflects a growing concern over the exploitation of veterans, with Paxton saying, "It is deeply disappointing that this business took advantage of men and women who have given so much to our country." In his pursuit of justice for exploited veterans, Paxton asserted his commitment, "I'm proud to advocate for justice for our Texas veterans at every opportunity," according to the Attorney General of Texas.
