A Texas man has been slammed with a heavy prison sentence after pleading guilty to child enticement and alien smuggling charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas reported. Paz Gomez-Magdaleno, 43, of Cameron County will face decades behind bars for his crimes, which include the possession of child pornography and the transportation of undocumented migrants.
Ordered by U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos, Gomez-Magdaleno will serve 60 months for the alien smuggling, 120 months for child pornography possession, and the highest count of 240 months for the enticement of a minor. During the sentencing, the courtroom erupted in shock as it was revealed that Gomez possessed explicit content featuring local minors, some even relatives. With his transfer to a federal prison looming, Gomez has been in custody since his arrest.
According to information released by the Justice Department, the heinous discovery was made after Gomez's tractor-trailer was inspected at a Border Patrol checkpoint near Sarita, Texas. Authorities, with the aid of a K-9 unit, found 20 undocumented immigrants hidden in the trailer and two cell phones which unveiled the disturbing images and videos.
Engaging in various conversations across different messaging apps, the investigation found Gomez masterminded a scheme where minors were enticed to send him explicit materials in exchange for money and gifts. His life, post-prison sentence, will be closely monitored with a lifetime of supervised release, where he will have limited access to the internet and required to register as a sex offender.
The investigation was a combined effort by Homeland Security Investigations, Border Patrol, and the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office, part of Project Safe Childhood — a DOJ initiative against child exploitation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Patrick Overman and John Marck led the prosecution, aiming to protect the innocent and bring predators like Gomez to justice.
