A Texas town is grappling with the tragic loss of a 16-year-old cheerleader, Lizbeth Medina, who was found stabbed to death in her home in Edna, a small community northeast of Victoria. As reported by Fox San Antonio, Rafael Govea Romero, a 23-year-old man, has been charged with her murder following his arrest over the weekend in Schulenburg.
According to the Edna Police Department, Romero is being held on a $2 million bond at the Jackson County Jail. Police also seized a vehicle and items that suggested a connection between Romero and the victim. Further complicating the case, Romero, who is originally from Mexico, was found to be undocumented and is being held on an ICE detainer due to an expired visa. The KSAT reports that the police are confident in the charge, with Edna Police Chief Rick Boone stating he is "100% confident" in the suspect's guilt.
The discovery of Medina's body was made by her mother, Jacqueline Medina, in the bathtub of their apartment on December 5. Lizbeth was scheduled to perform with her cheer squad at a local Christmas parade, but her absence alarmed her mother. This prompted a rush home, leading to the heartbreaking discovery. Jacqueline Medina, in an emotional reveal to KSAT, remembered her daughter as "bubbly, happy, funny" and as "basically my friend." "It was just her and I against the world, and they took her from me," she said.
Romero's arrest on Saturday followed a collaborative effort by several law enforcement agencies, including the Edna Police Department, Texas Rangers, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and Texas DPS. After being tracked to a residence where he was staying with family, Romero was taken into custody. Prior to this incident, Romero was charged with felony burglary in Schulenburg in October 2022 and had been serving probation. Details on the circumstances of Medina’s killing and how investigators tracked Romero are still limited, but what is clear is the profound loss felt by a community and a family mourning a young life cut tragically short.
