The Texas State's primary elections are heating up with a catalog of candidates solidified for the showdown ahead of the March elections. In a significant political development, former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden are set to lead the presidential nomination charge for their respective parties in Texas. Down-ballot, the drama unfolds with Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton engaging in political retaliation, backing primary challengers to House Republicans in a notable intra-party power struggle, according to the Texas Tribune.
Caught in a revengeful political crossfire, the Texas House Republicans find themselves targeted by Abbott and Paxton. Paxton is out to unseat GOP members who supported his impeachment, while Abbott aims at those who blocked his voucher program initiative, which would transfer public dollars to private schools. "It has led to a marked increase in primary challengers," with at least 57% of House Republicans having challengers this round, compared to 43% in the 2022 cycle, as reported by Texas Tribune.
North Texas is also witnessing its share of electoral fervor. Notably, former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez seeks to reclaim her former position, challenging incumbent Marian Brown in the Democratic primary. Familiar faces in Collin County, like Representatives Jeff Leach and Candy Noble, are facing challengers backed by Paxton, who is playing an influential role in shaping the election narrative in the state, as per KERA News.
The primary election is slated for March 5, with early voting kicking off on February 20 as Texans steer towards selecting their candidates for the general ballot in November, in accordance with KERA News.
