The Metropolitan Council of the Twin Cities is on a high after successfully reaching its environmental and public service goals for 2023. The Met Council boasts a clean water system that serves 111 cities, with nine wastewater treatment plants reaching a landmark of 135 years of perfect compliance with clean-water-discharge permits, according to their recent statement.

Not just limited to making a splash in water treatment, Metro Transit saw an uptick in ridership alongside launching various safety initiatives. Additional security staff and new community service officers became a staple at key light rail stations, providing much-needed reassurance for passengers. An experimental hyper-local transit service called Metro Transit Micro also kicked off on Minneapolis' Northside, offering residents a door-to-door convenience. "If you’ve ever had to carry a week’s worth of groceries six blocks from a bus stop, you’ll know how important a door-to-door service can be to a family without access to a car," said the Council.

Housing also took a front seat as the Met Council's Housing and Redevelopment Authority was recognized as a High Performer by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the 19th consecutive year. This award was echoed as they maintained efforts to help over 7,000 families and individuals find affordable housing in the past year. The Council's stride did not falter as they marched towards curbing the anguish climate change brings—a feat that saw them incorporating solar farms, satellite mapping for cities, and rolling out electric buses to mitigate pollution.

Planning for the future has always been at the crux of the Council's agenda. Currently advancing the Imagine 2050 initiative, the Council is devising a regional roadmap that envisages the next 30 years, carrying the torch forward from the Minnesota Legislature's mandate. The Council engaged with over a thousand residents and garnered input from local governments and community groups, recognizing the vitality of incorporating the youth's voice. "Historically, young people have been overlooked in regional planning, but these are the people we are making plans for." the Met Council reflected on its progressive approach.

As 2024 dawns, the Met Council pledges to continually confront glaring challenges such as climate change, racial disparities, and affordable housing shortages, with a community-centric approach driving their policies. Though the looming hurdles are high, the Council's spirit is firmly anchored in collaborative problem-solving, believing that the road to Imagine 2050 requires collective hands steering the wheel.
