A Wareham man received an 8–10-year prison sentence yesterday after he admitted to the brutal slaying of a 57-year-old woman inside her home, officials said. Danny Sherman, 58, entered a guilty plea to manslaughter, assault, and battery with a deadly weapon for the 2020 murder of Mardiette Deboyes, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz.
In a bizarre sequence of events, Wareham Police initially rushed to save Sherman, found distressed in a canoe, before they discovered the lifeless body of Deboyes. After being treated at Tobey Hospital, it emerged that Sherman lived with the victim and was quickly taken into custody, as reported by the DA's office.
The investigation, led by Massachusetts State Police Detectives and Wareham Police, connected Sherman to the crime scene, where the Chief Medical Examiner's office later ruled Deboyes' death a homicide caused by multiple sharp force injuries. Sherman, initially encountered in distress, faced immediate arrest following the identification of Deboyes' body.
In addition to prison time for manslaughter, Sherman will serve a probation period of 10 years on the assault charge after his incarceration. Assistant District Attorney Kevin O’Leary, who prosecuted the somber case, emphasized the severe nature of Sherman's violent act, residing with the deceased prior to his apprehension by law enforcement.
