A woman is behind bars after a violent robbery and stabbing at a Half Moon Bay Safeway, as announced by the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office. Amairani Cortes-Contreras, 30, faces three felony charges, including robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, after she allegedly made off with a woman's backpack and then viciously stabbed a man who tried to stop her.
The assault unfolded shortly after noon on Monday when the suspect was confronted by the male victim trying to recover his girlfriend's stolen property. Having fled the scene on a SamTrans bus, Cortes-Contreras was apprehended by deputies from the Coastside Patrol Bureau, the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office reports. Found with the alleged stolen goods, the suspect also had a knife, leading to her arrest.
Details released by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, on CBS San Francisco, reveal that the incident occurred at the Safeway located at 70 N. Cabrillo Highway. The male victim was stabbed not once, but twice, during the altercation with Cortes-Contreras.
Currently held in custody, Cortes-Contreras now waits to face the consequences of her actions. In light of the brutal attack, San Mateo County authorities are likely to proceed with a zero-tolerance stance on violent crime, ensuring that justice is served for those terrorized by such brazen acts of thievery and aggression. Upon her detention, deputies were able to recover the stolen property as well as the knife wielded during the crime.
