A female pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle in Long Beach in an incident that briefly turned the driver into a fugitive, police said. The collision occurred at around 5:26 p.m. on Saturday on the 2700 block of Atlantic Avenue. Long Beach police and fire department personnel responded quickly to the scene, where they found the woman with life-threatening injuries, according to a statement from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD). The Long Beach Fire Department attempted, unsuccessfully, to quickly render life-saving measures, but the woman died at the location of the crash.
"The preliminary investigation suggests a vehicle driving southbound on Atlantic Avenue struck the pedestrian," explained Long Beach police Lt. Jonathan Cole in a report obtained by FOX LA. After the accident, the male driver initially left the scene but then chose to return and cooperated fully with law enforcement officers.
Investigators closed off Atlantic Avenue for several hours between Patterson and Columbia streets as they worked to meticulously gather evidence and piece together the events that led to the deadly accident. The identity of the victim has not been released pending family notification, and the investigation into the collision continues, as stated by LBPD, with more details to be released at a later time.
