A tragic incident unfolded in Westborough, Massachusetts, Wednesday morning when a worker was crushed to death by a collapsing semi-trailer. The accident occurred around 9:20 a.m. in a lot off Computer Drive, near Route 9, where it was reported by WHDH that the trailer disastrously fell onto an employee, instantly killing them.

Firefighters and state and local police attempted to quickly lift the trailer using airbags in hopes of performing life-saving measures on the employee. However, as WHDH notes, by 11:30 a.m., they were still unable to free the worker’s body from the crushing weight of the trailer.

According to NBC Boston, the Westborough Fire Department announced that they were involved in an extensive rescue operation with heavy entrapment on the east side of the town. This operation significantly impacted their ability to respond to other calls, which were to be handled by mutual aid for the duration.

OSHA officials arrived on the scene to begin an investigation into the cause of the accident. The identity of the victim has not been released. Fire engines remained on the scene throughout the morning as authorities worked to carefully extricate and respect the remains of the deceased. The area around the incident was expected to be closed off to the public for several hours as the investigation continued.
