A pedestrian's life came to a tragic end Sunday evening on an Apple Valley road, authorities reported. Walking across State Highway 18 at about 6:20 p.m., a 62-year-old man from San Bernardino was struck by a vehicle and sustained critical injuries, per the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner's Department.

Deputies from the Apple Valley Sheriff's Station alongside rescue teams quickly responded to the accident scene near Kasota Rd. The victim was rushed to a local hospital but later died due to injuries. The driver, a 29-year-old resident of Apple Valley, was behind the wheel of a silver Toyota Corolla when the crash happened, and is said to have stayed to cooperate with the ensuing investigation, law enforcement said.

Investigators from the Sheriff's Department's Major Accident Investigation Team (M.A.I.T.) took charge of the scene, which led to the closure of the eastbound lanes of State Highway 18 for about three hours during evidence collection and witness interviews. Officials have urged anyone with information to come forward and assist with the ongoing inquiry.

"The driver of the Toyota Corolla was uninjured," according to a statement from authorities. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has relevant information can reach out to the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station by contacting Deputy J. Rodgers.
