It was a moment of glory for Abigail Boreen as she netted her first goal of the season in overtime to secure a victory for Minnesota against New York with a final score of 2-1. The win was not only a display of Boreen's timely scoring but also a rebound from Minnesota's recent loss in Boston, signaling a potential shift in momentum for the team.
During last Sunday's nail-biter, Boreen, who had started the season on the bench, proved to be the ace up Minnesota's sleeve after being activated just days before the game. "Kelly Pannek's shot was deflected by New York goaltender Abigail Levy but Boreen — a reserve to begin the season who was activated on Wednesday — tapped in the winner," reported by CBS News.
The game's opening act was no less impressive, with Abby Cook firing a wrist shot past New York's defense to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead in the first period. The New York defense, in an attempt to rally, witnessed Ella Shelton fire back with a one-timer in the third period, assisted by Micah Zandee-Hart, to even the score. According to KARE 11, Shelton passed "to Micah Zandee-Hart at the point, who tapped it back to Shelton on the right side for a one-timer 23 seconds into the third period that made it 1-1."
Despite the push from New York, it was Minnesota's game to lose — or so to incredibly win. The game marked a staring contest of sorts between the pipes as well, with New York's Abigail Levy rejecting a season-high 35 shots. Ultimately, it was Boreen's decisive goal in overtime that underscored the competitive edge Minnesota wielded that evening. Their victory avenged a previous loss to New York on January 14, where they ultimately fell in overtime despite holding a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.
