The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is charging ahead with an ambitious plan to bolster the state's electric vehicle infrastructure. By the end of 2025, travelers in Arizona can expect to find 21 new EV charging stations along the highways. This is part of a larger initiative to ease the concerns about electric vehicle range and to encourage Arizonians to transition to greener transportation alternatives.

ADOT is prepared to rapidly build these stations using a funding cocktail—80% federal dollars and the rest contributed by a private company that will ultimately own and operate the locations. As reported by AZ Family, the agency affirmed that no state money will be used in the construction, adhering to its public-private partnership model. These stations are to be strategically positioned off the freeway but within a mile of an interchange, with at least four chargers per station.

The scope of Arizona's EV charging network is set to expand even further, as ADOT adds seven state highway corridors to its plan. This initiative comprises critical routes such as State Route 87 and US 93, extending the network's reach. Yet more routes are to be announced in the coming years, after careful deliberation and public input, as detailed in a Gila Herald report.

The construction of these charging stations is slated to commence following a bidding process that wraps up on April 19, with contracts awarded this summer. "While the first round of electric vehicle charging stations will focus on interstates, ADOT plans to expand onto other highways starting with an additional round of bids in 2025," the agency said in a statement obtained by AZ Family. Feedstock for these future developments will come from analyzing the usage patterns of the initial stations.

Public participation is a cornerstone of the ADOT's approach to infrastructure development. The agency invites the public to engage in a virtual meeting about the recent plan updates, thereby ensuring that the expansion of the network mirrors the needs and preferences of the community it serves. Interested individuals can register for the upcoming meeting, scheduled for July 18, on ADOT's website.
