Arlington has completed a comprehensive, multi-million dollar project spanning three years aimed at mitigating flood-related issues faced by residents and safeguarding the city park. The $9.5 million initiative focused on bolstering the neighborhood against erosion and preventing floodwaters from infiltrating homes. This project, broken down into three phases, included reinforcing creek banks and upgrading infrastructure to shield against the adverse effects of severe weather. Arlington officials highlight this effort as part of a broader $16.8 million initiative initiated in 2019 to manage stormwater effectively, showcasing the city's commitment to the well-being of its neighborhoods, according to the City of Arlington, Texas.
The problematic area, located between West Randol Mill Road and Fielder Road, Sanford Street, and Oakwood Lane, had experienced significant flooding in the past, with over 35 homes identified as flood victims, some submerged as recently as 2018. The project involved strategic measures such as repairing Randol Mill Park's erosion issues, widening culverts, enhancing inlets on Randol Mill Road, and extensive repaving to fortify the infrastructure against future downpours. The comprehensive approach also included upgrading water systems, replacing outdated concrete channels, and improving bridges to create more resilient streets during storms.
Arlington's commitment to flood prevention extends beyond this project, with the city having invested over $159 million since 2009 in battling floods and enhancing stormwater systems. The efforts culminated in storm drain upgrades, water and sewer system enhancements, the installation of a new traffic signal at Fielder Road and Sanford Street, and the resurfacing of streets from Division Street to Randol Mill Road.
