Arlington's homage to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will have to wait, as the city announces the postponement of several events due to impending severe winter conditions. The weekend's festivities were slated to include an ecumenical service, day of service activities, and a documentary screening among others, all now delayed in response to the frosty forecast.
"Most of these events involve participants, visitors and volunteers to be outside," Lisa Thompson, president of the Arlington Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee, Inc. Board of Directors said. "We want to protect people from freezing conditions." With the thermometer set to dip, the decision was cast, prioritizing public safety over planned programming, according to the City of Arlington, Texas.
The postponed activities include the MLK Hubert Moss Ecumenical Service, Zeb Strong Jr. MLK Day of Service, MLK Day of Service Festival, MLK Youth Extravaganza, and the historical documentary screening. Nevertheless, the committee intends to quickly reschedule these events. "While we have postponed these events, it is still vital to celebrate and to take introspection, both collectively and individually, of Dr. King’s dream," Thompson stated, signaling an undeterred spirit in the face of climatic challenges, as per the City of Arlington, Texas.
Despite the change in plans, Arlington will not altogether forgo its MLK festivities, with the Friday and Saturday events proceeding. Aaron Perales, MLK Advancing the Dream Four-Day Celebration chairperson, encouraged community engagement, "We look forward to seeing our community attending the MLK Gala this evening, January 12, and the MLK Step Show and Talent Showcase and Poetry Meets Jazz events on Saturday, January 13," he said, per the City of Arlington, Texas.
