Arlington's residents should mark their calendars for January 18, when they can dial in to join a Telephone Town Hall intended to address the shift in local trash collection services. The meeting, slated for 6 p.m., requires registration by the residents no later than 3 p.m. on the day of the event. They're encouraged to ask questions about changes that will soon affect the way their garbage is picked up—from trash cart dimensions and color options, to curb placement and special accommodations for those with disabilities, according to the City of Arlington, Texas.

The Town Hall aims to explain the municipality's move, alongside Republic Services, to abandon manual trash pickup in favor of an automated cart system. The intensive nature of manual collection has made it difficult to attract and retain workers. The conversation on January 18 will also be broadcast in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese to cater to Arlington's diverse population.

Residents can also already start to make special trash cart requests. This includes doorside services for individuals with disabilities, smaller 65-gallon carts available from June, and the option to get up to three carts per residence at an additional cost. Requests can be made either by using the Ask Arlington App or by calling the Action Center.

Starting February 2024, all Arlington households will transition to the new automated system, with waste collection days to coincide with their recycling schedule. The change promises to keep animals at bay and reduce litter by keeping garbage more securely stowed until pickup. This switch to automated service with trash carts is expected to result in a more consistent, reliable service for the community, as per the City of Arlington, Texas.
