Authorities in Atascosa County, Texas, sprang into action when a situation involving numerous dogs living in squalid conditions caught their attention. As many as 29 dogs were seized by Atascosa Animal Control from a property that officials have described as a 'hoarding situation'. KENS 5 reported that the dogs, some showing signs of aggression, were found living in poor conditions, tethered to trees and amidst debris.

Henry Dominguez, the director of the county's Animal Control Division, explained the severity of the situation, noting the chained dogs had to seek makeshift shelter among junk, with little evidence of proper sustenance. Dominguez stated to KENS 5, "All the animals are chained down to some object. They do have a form of shelter, and they do have water. The food situation is what concerns me, there is no food on the property that I can see." The decision quickly to take in and assess the animals' health was driven by these observations.

Confronted with the authorities' presence, the homeowner Patricia Stone arrived and claimed she was trying to rescue the dogs, which people allegedly left on her property. Stone reluctantly admitted struggling to manage the growing number of canines. "I just couldn’t dig myself out," she conveyed in a statement obtained by KENS 5. "Dominguez is helping me. Animal control is here to help me with them, and we’ll take it from there."

Meanwhile, a corresponding event unfolded nearby, where Atascosa County Animal Control found at least 30 starving dogs in a separate rescue operation. The dogs were suffering from malnourishment, prompting immediate intervention. The woman in charge of these dogs expressed a complex mix of relief and sorrow to KSAT. "In a way, I’m glad. In a way, I’m not... These are my kids," she said. The priority now shifts to restoring the dogs to health, after which it will be decided whether they can return to their owner or will be placed up for adoption.

In both instances, officials have signaled a strong stance against animal neglect. Dominguez emphasized the importance of community vigilance, urging the public to speak up when witnessing such distressing conditions. "That is our objective here is to get these animals out of these conditions and hopefully they will move on and be adopted or go on to other rescuers and live a good life," he informed KENS 5. As investigations continue, the final deliberations will rest in the hands of the district attorney.
