The City of Atlanta is kicking off a year-long bash to toast the 50th anniversary of its Neighborhood Planning Units (NPU), a system designed to foster citizen engagement in urban planning since its inception on August 13, 1974, the city is ready to highlight the NPU's impact, the official channel for Atlantans to sway neighborhood development.
Atlanta's Mayor Andre Dickens expressed his enthusiasm for the landmark year, hailing the NPU's endurance as a testimony to the initiative of former Mayor Maynard Jackson and the community's dedication, saying "Neighborhood Planning Units have reached their 50th year thanks to the vision of Mayor Maynard Jackson, and thanks to the residents and businesses who show their love of their city through community engagement," a clear nod to continued civic involvement.
A series of festivities and programs are being plotted by the Department of City Planning, aligning with the Mayor’s Office and various city agencies, community groups, and businesses these partnerships aim to salute the NPU's legacy while drawing more residents into the fold.
The half-century milestone will unfold in three segments starting with "Legacy of Love," from January through April, paying homage to pioneering figures and reflecting on Mayor Maynard Holbrook Jackson's illustrious contribution then phases 2 and 3 will capture the current essence of the NPUs and look ahead to fortify its future effectiveness, meanwhile Mayor Dickens during the early part of the year had unveiled a series of commemorations for Mayor Jackson—Atlanta’s trailblazing first Black Mayor.
Referencing a cherished ideal, the former Mayor Jackson underscored communal action in his 1974 inaugural speech stating that, “We must be a city of love, and our definition of love must be a definition of action... Love must be a city filled with people working together to improve the quality of all our lives,” a sentiment that echoes through today's anniversary ethos.
