It appears that Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has held tight to its unenviable distinction as the American airport where the most firearms are found. In 2023, TSA agents discovered a whopping 451 guns at the hub, surpassing the firearms found at any other airport in the nation, reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
But Atlanta wasn't the only city making headlines. The TSA found an all-time high of 6,737 firearms in carry-ons across the country last year, and of those, an alarming 93% were loaded. The top three airports for firearm discoveries in 2023 also included Dallas Fort Worth International, with 378 guns, and Houston's George Bush Intercontinental, with 311, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The trend is distressing given the strict rules against carrying firearms onto airplanes, a point underscored by TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers. "I always say there’s no excuse because it’s never been allowed. It’s not a 9/11 thing, it wasn’t allowed before then," Dankers expressed in an interview, as per WSAV.
Those caught with a weapon in their carry-on can expect hefty consequences. Travelers found with a firearm can face civil penalties that may reach up to $14,950 per violation, as per TSA guidelines. More so, offenders could lose their TSA PreCheck eligibility for up to four years and could undergo enhanced screening measures to ensure they pose no further threat. Such measures demonstrate TSA's unwavering commitment to maintaining security, despite the seeming surge in attempts to breach it, as stated by WSAV.
