A hiker's afternoon excursion turned precarious after a 40-foot fall from a ledge on Mt. Bonnell in West Austin, authorities said. The Austin Fire Department mounted a vigilant rescue operation Tuesday afternoon when they received the distress call around 3:45 p.m. from the popular hiking spot located in the 3600 block of Mount Bonnell Road, according to CBS Austin.
Fire crews had to expertly navigate and rappel down the ledge to reach the fallen hiker, who reported injuries from the significant tumble. Austin-Travis County EMS quickly evaluated the situation, deeming the victim's injuries non-life-threatening but still transporting the individual as a trauma-alert patient. Videos capturing the intense rescue operation later surfaced, showcasing firefighters executing a careful rope rescue to safely extricate the hiker, as per a recent video posted on YouTube.

During the ongoing rescue efforts, officials warned the public to steer clear from the area to ensure both the victim's and the rescue team's safety.
