Austin Independent School District (AISD) is making the shift to sustainable transportation, unveiling its inaugural set of electric school buses in a push for greener commutes. The move has gained the attention of local leaders, including Congressman Lloyd Doggett and Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, who will be present at a press conference on Thursday, as per an announcement by the district.
The unveiling marks not just advancement in technology but also an extension of the district's environmental commitments, with a $6.25 million grant from the Environmental Protection Agency boosting their goals. This grant, which the throngs of supporters have lauded, will enable AISD to acquire 25 additional electric buses with the grand vision of transforming their entire fleet to electric by 2035, according to Austin ISD.
The upcoming event to showcase the new electric buses is set for 10 a.m. on January 25 at the Austin ISD Southeast Bus Terminal. In addition to the grand showing, the district's transportation team has promised an interactive experience with a guided tour and a first-hand bus ride. Amidst anticipation, preparations are already underway to welcome media and dignitaries, with the media relations team gearing up to assist with setups for coverage. Interested attendees are advised to arrive ahead of time for equipment setup, as per Austin ISD.
