Austin residents are bracing for an abrupt shift from today's sunny and warm conditions as back-to-back cold fronts are set to bring gusty winds. A plunge in temperatures, and the possibility of severe weather including storms and hail in the coming days. According to the National Weather Service's forecast, today's high near 73 with breezy south winds will give way to a "slight chance of showers" and a dramatic rise in wind speeds possibly gusting as high as 40 mph tonight.
The next 6 days will be eventful with patchy fog and very warm temperatures today. A few showers and storms east of Hwy 281 tonight, then strong winds Friday. Then Sunday we'll the coldest air of the winter season arrive. pic.twitter.com/S72JLGN2dP

The Wind Advisory, which remains in effect from midnight tonight to 1 PM CST Friday, warns of "northwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph," and states that "gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects and tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result," as detailed on the National Weather Service website. The community is urged to take caution, particularly when driving, and to secure any outdoor belongings susceptible to the forceful winds.
As reported by KXAN, the initial cold front will lead to a "whole lotta wind" with Friday's conditions being "sunny and cooler" after the storm risk passes, but this is just the precursor to an even more severe cold spell following the arrival of a second Arctic-driven front that's expected to hit sometime between Sunday evening and into the new week.
The second onslaught of frigid air is forecasted to send temperatures plummeting with Monday morning lows potentially dropping to the "teens and many wind chills in the single digits," and in the Hill Country there may possibly be wind chills near 0°, KXAN further states the coming freeze is an "early warning to make sure to protect people, pets, pipes, and plants" from the bitter cold that's on its way. While significant ice accumulation is currently not anticipated, the stark drop in temperature is sure to be a shock to the system after the recent mild conditions.
