An early morning 911 call in north Austin spiraled into a lethal confrontation, resulting in a woman's death and a suspect wounded by police gunfire, authorities reported. The volatile situation, which began around 12:29 a.m. with a distress call from a stabbing victim, unfolded rapidly when Austin police officers reached the home on Uttimer Lane, according to KXAN.
Holding a bleeding stomach, the victim told dispatchers that a man was threatening a woman with a knife inside the house. Within seven minutes, police were at the scene, guided by a person wounded outside the residence, and heard screams that hastened their forced entry. While approaching the door, the officers stormed through the front door at 12:37 a.m., as per FOX 7 Austin's account.
The officers quickly encountered a horrifying sight—a man wielding a knife and a woman already suffering from stab injuries. In the ensuing chaos, police shot the suspect, and the call for shots fired was broadcast at 12:38 a.m. While the rescue of the injured party and three children from the house was underway, another woman, despite officers' life-saving efforts, succumbed to her stab wounds and was pronounced dead by 1:06 a.m.
Austin Police Interim Chief Robin Henderson detailed the officers' swift response, with their emergency actions being caught on body cameras. "The footage will be released within 10 business days as per APD policy," Henderson stated in a briefing outlined by KXAN. The victims and the suspect, now in custody, were transported to local hospitals and are listed in stable condition.
As investigations proceed, the three officers who discharged their weapons, with respective years of service ranging from less than one to over four, have been placed on administrative duty. Two parallel inquiries by the Special Investigations Unit and the Travis County District Attorney's Office, alongside an administrative review by APD's Internal Affairs and the Office of Police Oversight, have been initiated, as reported by FOX 7 Austin. The public has been urged to assist by forwarding any relevant information to authorities or Crime Stoppers.
