The curtain has fallen on the Blues on the Green summer concert series for 2024. Austin City Limits Radio has announced that due to prohibitive costs, the beloved Austin event, which has run over three decades, will not take place this year as cited in KXAN news. Anchored in the verdant heart of Zilker Park, the festival has long been a highlight for locals, offering a blend of music and community under the Texas sky.
The event's iconic draw has been its free entry, a tradition the festival organizers have struggled to maintain. “Without admission fees or bar sales, it’s become more challenging every year to produce an event that’s grown to this size and still keep it free and open to the public,” ACL said. This financial jigsaw has proven too intricate to piece together for the upcoming season, prompting the pause. Engaging with the city, community, and sponsors to find a way to maybe bring back the festival has been floated as a potential avenue for its return.
Last year's showcase was already scaled back, featuring two nights of performances with headliners such as Nashville’s Devon Gilfillian and Austin’s own Wild Child. The efforts to preserve the event's core ethos — free, inclusive communal revelry — have been commendable but now, the financial hurdles have outstripped the festival’s capacities.
Austin City Limits Radio sees this challenging decision as a "hold on" instead of a goodbye, signaling potential hopes for a resurgent festival down the line, a sentiment echoed by a statement obtained by the Austin Chronicle. "We love BOTG, Austin loves BOTG, and it’s our hope that we can work with the city, community, and sponsors to return sometime soon," the radio station stated. Reiterating their appreciation, they added, “Know that we’re grateful to everyone who’s spread out a blanket, worked behind the scenes or played our stage.”
