34-year-old Sixto Banegas Matute from Balch Springs was apprehended on Wednesday, Jan. 10, charged with the killing of Jennifer Mendez Olascoaga, a 24-year-old teacher’s aide for the Dallas Independent School District. Mesquite Police Department's investigation led to Banegas Matute's arrest, as they pieced together phone records and evidence that placed both individuals at the scene of the crime, according to FOX 4 News.
The intersection of digital footprints and real-world events mapped the last hours of Mendez Olascoaga's life, weaving a timeline that ended tragically. She was last seen on September 27 at about 8:11 p.m., departing a mobile home park in Seagoville. Mendez Olascoaga's vehicle was later discovered abandoned on Lawson Road the next morning, with personal items such as her purse and phone missing. The grim discovery of her remains came in October near Interstate 20 in Mesquite, which was confirmed by officials to be hers in November, as reported by NBC DFW.
Further investigations led by police months after her disappearance uncovered that Banegas Matute and Mendez Olascoaga knew each other. However, the motive behind the murder remains enshrouded in mystery. Banegas Matute's phone was tracked to the same wooded area off I-20 where Mendez Olascoaga's remains were eventually found. Captured on the night she vanished, phone records indicated an exchange of texts between the two as Mendez Olascoaga left a Dallas QuikTrip, further entwining Banegas Matute to the slaying.
After her relatives stumbled upon her desolate Buick, tucked on the shoulder of Lawson Road, the subsequent law enforcement probe took a sharp turn when both of their phones pinged moving west on Interstate 20. Banegas Matute's phone later led authorities to his home address in an apartment complex at Balch Springs, adding further credence to his connection with the teacher’s aide’s murder, as per the arrest warrant affidavit. Now, Banegas Matute has been transferred to the Dallas County Jail, awaiting further proceedings in this harrowing case.
