Beltrami County Sheriff's Office Bans Vehicles on Upper Red Lake to Ensure Fisher Safety

In response to the precarious ice conditions that have put fishermen at risk, the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office has implemented a vehicle ban on Upper Red Lake, effective at sunset on Saturday. This decision comes in the wake of multiple instances where anglers found themselves trapped on fragile ice, including a major rescue operation where 122 fishermen were saved from an isolated ice floe. "This is a decision that was not taken very lightly," Sheriff Jason Riggs conveyed, according to a report by FOX 9. The ban encompasses all motorized vehicles, including snowmobiles and ATVs, and will be enforced until conditions are deemed safe.

Violators of the new restrictions are subject to misdemeanor charges, though Sheriff Riggs acknowledges the challenges that lay ahead. "The bandwidth for us to go out and enforce this is going to be difficult," Riggs stated. The local resort owners are reportedly in agreement with the sheriff's decision. These restrictions, as informed by the WDIO article, are necessary after the ice's integrity has come into serious question following recent weather conditions.

Kevin Waldo, owner of the West Wind Resort on the east side of Upper Red Lake and a Kelliher Fire Department member who assisted with the rescues, has voiced his understanding of the measures, albeit recognizing the cost to his livelihood. "It’s definitely going to effect us. We have reservations, we have people that are coming up here planning to go out in portables and things like that, and they’re probably not going to be able to now," Waldo relayed in a statement obtained by FOX 9. Concerned for the safety of visitors to the lake, he stated, "We want everyone to be safe out there."

County officials are prepared to reassess the status of the ice restrictions as conditions evolve, with the hope of lifting the ban as soon as it is prudent.
