The Bloomington Police Department (BPD) has announced the promotion of Damon Bitney to the position of deputy chief, marking a new chapter in his long-standing career with the force. Bitney, who served as a commander since 2018, has been a part of the BPD since 2000, climbing the ranks over two decades of dedicated service.
During his tenure with BPD, Bitney has worn many hats including that of a patrol officer, narcotics detective, and SWAT team member for over 16 years. This wealth of experience is now set to inform his new role as deputy chief, a position that oversees diverse aspects of the department's operations. "I am extremely grateful to all the members of the Bloomington Police Department, past and present, who have made this a premier law enforcement agency," Bitney said, according to a statement on the BPD website. He further pledged, “I understand the extreme importance of this position, and I will do everything in my power to honor our history, collaborate for improvement, and develop future leaders to ensure we become and stay the most respected police department.”
The new deputy chief is also known for his educational pursuits, contributing his expertise as an assistant instructor at Rasmussen University. Bitney bolsters his on-the-ground experience with solid academic credentials, holding a Bachelor of Science from Metropolitan State University and being a graduate of the Northwestern University Center for Public Safety School of Police Staff and Command.
