Chaos briefly erupted in a White Settlement neighborhood as an unexpected discovery led to the evacuation of several homes on New Year's Eve. A grenade, thought to be of an older military style, was found in a house undergoing renovations, prompting a swift response from the authorities. The grenade was located inside the home at the 9200 block of Lanham Street, according to the local White Settlement Police Department.
The new homeowner, while giving their property a fresh start, stumbled upon the old-school ordnance, a relic of an age long past that managed to briefly put the present on pause. The find led to the Fort Worth Fire Department's Arson & Bomb Squad being called in to make sure the device was nothing but a dud. Nearby residents were asked to evacuate their homes as a precaution while the team worked to assess the potential threat, as reported by NBC DFW.
"The device did not contain explosive material," White Settlement Police Chief Christopher Cook said, giving the all-clear for residents to return. This reassuring conclusion came after a tense period of uncertainty that enveloped the community as the bomb squad proceeded with their inspection, as per WFAA.
