Boston's push for a cleaner future just revved up with the Biden administration's announcement of $20 million dedicated to acquiring 50 new electric school buses for the city. This move is part of a broader, nationwide effort to curb the environmental and health hazards posed by diesel-fueled buses. The financial boost comes from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Bus Grant Program and is slated to steer the city closer to its goal of a fully electric fleet by 2030.
Traditionally diesel-run, the iconic yellow school buses of Boston have long been contributors to the city's air pollution. Electric buses promise a significant reduction in such harmful emissions. The transition will not only benefit the environment but also the health of students and drivers who are exposed to exhaust daily. The city currently operates 640 school buses, highlighting the sheer scale of this clean energy upgrade, according to The Boston Globe.
"This unprecedented federal investment will mean healthier commutes for our students and bus drivers, cleaner air in our neighborhoods, and a giant step in our transition to a greener and climate-ready City," Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said. The initiative won't just keep the skies clear but will help drive domestic manufacturing efforts, stimulating job creation in the burgeoning sector of clean energy transportation, as per WHDH.
Senator Elizabeth Warren, in a statement, drove the point home about the multifaceted benefits of this funding. "After years of fighting for investments in clean energy, I’m glad that we are able to deliver federal funding for a fleet of new electric school buses in Massachusetts," she said. "With this funding, we can reduce health risks from air pollution, boost domestic manufacturing, while creating good-paying jobs in the process, and fight the climate crisis for the next generation. This is a big win for our communities, and I will keep fighting for more of these investments", per WHDH.
The $53 million funding is a significant slice of the Biden Administration's $1 billion allocation towards electric school buses across the United States. Already in circulation are 20 EV buses within the Boston school system, with an additional 19 expected to join before the close of the school year. By summer 2025, these 50 new electric vehicles will roll onto Boston’s streets, marking a major step towards the city’s green targets. The move underscores a national push to modernize infrastructure and address climate concerns at the grassroots level, starting with the daily school route.
