Bostonians are getting a slight respite from extreme weather conditions today, with the National Weather Service reporting a 30 percent chance of rain tapering off this morning. After the downpour eases, patches of fog are expected to clear by 9am, giving way to a mostly sunny afternoon with temperatures descending to around 43 degrees by 5pm. The forecast also warns of brisk southwest winds reaching up to 20 mph, with potential gusts soaring as high as 32 mph.
Clear skies will prevail tonight, while the mercury dips to a low of about 33 degrees. It's a breezy forecast for Bostonians, with winds from the west southwest pushing 13 to 17 mph, and occasional gusts possibly hitting 29 mph, according to the National Weather Service. The sunny weather is expected to move on through Thursday and Friday, with highs hovering near the mid-40s.
An alert by Boston 25 News warns of potential flooding and wind damage after overnight showers and a recent snowmelt. While winds are calming, gusts up to 30 mph might occur this afternoon. "Because the ground is so saturated and trees are stressed, any wind gust could lead to isolated tree damage through the afternoon," says the Boston 25 News report.
As Saturday approaches, Bostonians should brace for another weather system that threatens to deliver another round of heavy rain, and, gusty winds are nearly a certainty. Although warmer temperatures will spare the city from winter precipitation, high temperatures could reach the 50s, effectively ruling out snow or ice. But come next Tuesday, the notion of spring-like weather will be swiftly undercut by another Arctic blast, with Boston 25 News cautioning against a "possible development of a storm system on the leading edge of this colder air." The trajectory and intensity of this system remain variables to watch closely in the days ahead.
