Brookhaven just amped up its green scene by christening a new swath of parkland to honor a local environmental champ. The city dedicated about 14 acres of serene greenspace to former Mayor Rebecca Chase Williams, a fitting tribute for her greens-saving efforts. Friday's ceremony at 1621 Johnson Ferry Road marked the park's official naming.
In an effort dubbed preservation, the greenspace's naming ceremony comes with a pat on the back for Williams, hailed by Mayor Pro Tempore Linley Jones. "Rebecca Chase Williams dedicated years toward saving this acreage from development and providing a passive area that preserves the quality of life for our existing residents," said Jones, according to an official statement released by the Brookhaven Georgia.
The plot nestled on Johnson Ferry Road isn't just any chunk of earth. Scooped up by Brookhaven back in June 2022, the land is the third biggest greenspace purchase the city's seen in a decade, showing a commitment to keeping its lungs green and air clean. Not just lying around looking pretty, the City's got big plans, busy uprooting invasive vegetation to turn the place into what's meant to be an urban oasis. When the City's done with their clean-up job, people can look forward to a blissfully passive greenspace. With these efforts, Rebecca Chase Williams Park is shaping up to be a slice of Eden in Brookhaven.
